RECYCLING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: I don't have enough recycle bins. Can I use a cardboard box?
A: No. That's not an approved bin substitute (as a laundry basket
might be). Since it's also recyclable it might be confusing to the truck
workers, and in a heavy rain it might fall apart. If you need an
additional bin, you can buy one from the DPW at 201 Bedford Street. Call ahead
to make sure they have some in stock. (781) 861-2757.
Q: I have maybe a dozen or so very old fireworks -- at least 15 years old.
They are pretty low-level: sparklers and a few other things. How can I
get rid of them? The hazardous waste people won't take them. Can I
put them in the trash?
A: Deliver them to Fire Chief Peter Torode or Assistant Chief
Middlemiss at the main fire station during normal business hours. They
should be transported in the trunk.
Q: I read an article about towns (Concord, Arlington, others) that are
distributing rain barrels at a reduced cost. Can Lexington do this?
A: Not this year, anyway, but possibly in the future. These barrels are
the ones made by The New England Rain Barrel Company. They are
re-used 55 gallon plastic barrels with hose fittings and an insect-proof
inlet. If you use a lot of water in your garden it might be
worth it to you to order one from them directly. See their web site at
http://www.nerainbarrel.com/Models.html
or call them at (978) 927-0711.
Tip: With most laser and jet printers, it is possible to print on both sides
rather than using two sheets of paper. Also, for many uses, you can
print on the back of used or scrap paper instead of using a blank piece.
When you do need to use new paper, make sure you buy paper with recycled
content. Companies such as HP and Great white make copier/printer paper
with 30% recycled content. Try Staples or other office supply stores.
At Discovery Day, May 24th, the DPW will have displays about recycling and
composting. Drop by!
