Let's Talk Trash, edited by Laura Dickerson
March 28, 2002, Column from the Lexington Minuteman

This biweekly column tries to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about recycling, composting and the town's solid waste program.

Q. How can I get rid of wallpaper?
A: If it is unused rolls, the Building Materials Resource Center in will take it, though they'd prefer to have enough for a room (three to four rolls). Call 617-4272491. If you mean you've removed some wallpaper, put it in the trash - the glue residue would make it impossible to recycle.

Q: We have some debris that we removed from an interior wall of our home. It is made of metal mesh plus a cement-like material that was designed to look like brick work on a living room wall. It is now broken into pieces approximately 6 inches up to 24 inches long, no more than 6 inches wide. Is this something that can be left for curbside disposal, and if so how do we set it out for pickup?
A: This is a gray area. Technically it probably would be considered construction and demolition waste, which Waste Management can refuse to pick up. Practically speaking, if there is little enough that you can put it into a tagged bag (weighing less than 50 pounds) they will take it. People who hire a contractor to do this sort of work should always make sure that the contractor is responsible for removal. Do-it-yourselfers have a harder time. C&D waste can be delivered to facilities such as that run by Mabardy in Cambridge, for a fee.

For interesting information about recycling, see the Web site: http://www.nrc recycle.org/.
