Let's Talk Trash column, edited by Laura Dickerson
July 5, 2001
This biweekly column tries to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about recycling, composting and the town’s solid waste program
Q: How do I get rid of a mattress? Do I call for an appointment? Do I stick a tag on it?
A: Appliance pickups need to be scheduled in advance, but this sort of bulky item can go with your regular trash. No tag is needed.
Q: Is there a limit on the amount of recycling we can put out at one time?
A: No. Put out as many bins as you have, plus other bin-like containers such as a laundry basket or storage cube. If you still don't have enough room, your brown paper bags of paper recycling can be next to the bins. Make sure that there is space between your recycling and your trash. The DPW suggests six to eight feet.
Q: I was away on Saturday when the additional recycling bins were handed out. Can I still get one?
A: Yes. Go to the DPW building at 201 Bedford St. between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on a weekday. You will need to bring an ID that shows you to be a Lexington resident.
Q: Is there information online about what we can recycle and how the tags work?
A: Yes. See
