This biweekly column tries to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about recycling, composting and the town's solid waste program.

Q: You've listed places to donate women's business clothing. I'd like to donate my wedding dress to charity. Where should I take it?

A: Call the Fairy GodMother Project of Massachusetts, Inc. at 508-8247748 or see their Web site: fairygodmotherprojectofma.org. This organization collects prom dresses to give to students who can't afford to buy them, and also accepts bridal gowns.

The Making Memories breast cancer foundation (based in Oregon) also

collects wedding dresses for resale, using the proceeds to help people with breast cancer. Try makingmemories.org/babc.html or call 503-252-3955.

Q: I have a burnt-out fluorescent bulb. Can I put it in my recycling bin, or what should I do with it?

A: Fluorescent lights contain mercury, and are considered hazardous waste. They need to be dropped off at Hartwell Avenue on the household hazardous waste collection days. The next one is Aug. 21, from 9 am. until 2 p.m. No light bulbs should go into the recycle bin - they are glass on the outside, but can't be recycled. Also, don't put broken glass of any type into the bin.
