Trash Talk, July 22, 2004
By Laura Dickerson
Q: Can people put tires out with the trash?
A: The town will collect one tire without the rim per week. Put it next to your trash. If you want to get rid of more than that at once or don't want to take it off the rim, you can take them to Carroll's at 700 Waltham St., 781-861-6060. There will be a small charge.
Q: Can I recycle old music cassettes or video tapes?
A: You can't put them into the recycle bin, but as long as they work (either commercially recorded or done at home) you can donate them to Goodwill.
Reminder
CRTs (computer monitors and televisions) may not be disposed of curbside with your trash due to their high lead content.. The DPW hosts several CRT drop-off collections for Lexington residents every year. A collection is scheduled from 8 am. -1 p.m. on Saturday, July 24 at Bedford Street. Call 781-861-2757.
You can bring not just the screens, but all computer parts from mice to CPUs, as well as printers, fax machines and so forth. Stereo equipment and other electronics are fine. Do not bring microwave ovens - they should be picked up as appliances. For appliances, call Waste Management at 800-649-2945 to schedule free pickup. What to do with batteries confuses some people. The CRT/electronics drop-off is not the time to bring them. Regular alkaline batteries made in the last 10 years can be thrown out with the regular trash.
There are collection boxes for button batteries (such as those used in watches or hearing aids) around town; in the library and at the Town Office Building. Theatre Camera will take non-alkaline batteries, and so will the Household Hazardous waste site.
If you miss this CRT collection, there are several options. You can wait for the one in the fall. ACB computer brokers will also accept CRTs. Call 978-521-6511 or go online at
http://www. acbrecovery. com/For people who don't want to wait for the next CRT and electronics collection day or find it inconvenient to come on a Saturday, there is a company that will come to your home for a fee and collect them. The goods ultimately end up at Electronicycle, the same place that recycles the town's electronics. Ewaste Solutions, 781-8625558
