Tophet Swamp Conservation Area in Lexington, MA

In geologic times, this area was a vast lake known as Lake Concord. Eutrophication has filled the lake bed with deep deposits of peat, and today the Minuteman Bikeway cuts through what is mostly inaccessible wetlands. Many brooks are filtered through this important wetlands on their way toward the Shawsheen River. Beaver are active in this area. A path that nuns alongside Route 128 from an access at the Bikeway connects this property with the Katahdin Woods property.
